In a 2-1 ruling, the court said the state had a duty to provide students with broad educational opportunities that extend beyond “mere reading, writing and arithmetic” and prepare them to compete in today’s society. The ruling did not say whether that mandate was being met, but it sent the case back to Marion Superior Court to determine whether “Indiana’s current public school system through its funding provides our students with an education as envisioned by the framers of our constitution.
